Taff Merthyr

Taff Merthyr was sunk in 1922 -1924 by the Taff Merthyr Steam Coal Company. This was a joint venture between the Ocean and Powell Duffryn companies.
Both shafts had a finished diameter of 21ft.

The Colliery started output in 1926 straight after the general strike of that year. The company also provided housing for its workforce in the colliery village.
In 1954 the N.C.B also opened a drift mine adjacent to Taff Merthyr known as the Trelewis Drift. This ceased production in 1991.

In 1992 the Conservative Government of the time announced the closure of the pit. Despite opposition to the closure the pit was eventually closed in 1993 with demolition of the site taking place in 1994.
