Old Pit We don't have very much information on Old pit. What we do have tells us that the mine utilised four shafts, the first of which was sunk by a company we know only as "P.D.", but which we are reliably informed stands for Powell Duffryn, in 1863, and the last of the four was sunk in 1905. An explosion, which occurred on the 4th of December 1875 cost 22 men their lives.
