Ogilvie Colliery
1920 - 1975

Ogilvie Colliery was the last big mine to be sunk by The Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Company. Sank at Deri in 1920, the mine had a relatively short life compared to other Welsh collieries.

In 1969 the mine experienced problems and came under increasing pressure to close. The problems were compounded when in 1971, a fire underground caused the closure of one of the mine's coal faces.

Shortly before the colliery closed in 1975, the BBC used the mine to film "Above us the Earth". Sci-fi fans will also have seen parts of the mine, which was used during the filming of an episode of "Dr Who".
