MINING 2000

.

Welcome to the Mining 2000 Page

.

This page was developed to mark the new century in 2000. Since then it has remained as a simple testament to the loss of one of this country's major industries. In March 2019 Dave Douglass attended a lecture with the title of, "Mining Industry, What Mining Industry?", from speaker: Paul Bradley, CEng, CMgr, FIMMM, MCMI. With a bleak picture of the industry twenty years later, Dave Douglass comments on;
Mining Industry, What Mining Industry?

On this and the following pages, we will be taking a look at the collieries that are still working today. We will look at their history, their present situation and the forecast for their futures.

Sources.

We have utilised various sources and references in compiling the Mining 2000 section. Some of this is anecdotal comes from the men and women of the pit communities themselves. From Union officials from the mine companies, some from local papers and publications. Dave Douglass had collected much of the technical , mining data together with social and Trade Union histories during research work for a number of his books and more particularly his MA Thesis on mining contracts nation-wide. The base technical material has come from the recent DTI report on current and forecasted trends in the industry drawn up by International Mining Consultants. Some of the plans used come from here while others came from the respective collieries themselves during the research period. We have had cooperation both from RJB Mining and Hatfield Coal Company in collating materials.

We have used many photographs to illustrate these pages. Some are the copyright of Stuart Tomlins, Chairman Of The Shropshire mines Trust, while others are the copyright of A Covell and Dave Douglass. We will endeavour to include the copyright details of photographs we use. If you feel we have missed crediting anyone for their original work, please inform us and we will try to correct the matter.

These pages are still under construction and, since this is rather a large project, may be for some time.We are looking for photographs and information which we can include in these pages.
If you can help, then please don't hesitate to contact us.

Also, we have no information at all on these small mines. If anyone could provide us with photographs, historical data, anecdotes, or any other material, we would be extremely grateful.
