About The NUM Office & Advice Centre

The NUM Office & Advice Centre was closed due to lack of funds in 2006.

The Advice Centre was conceived specifically to serve miners, ex-miners and their widows and dependents.

The Advice Centre was set up by David Douglass BA. MA. after Hatfield Main Colliery was privatised and the NUM was no longer recognised there. David, as Union Secretary and Delegate opened The Mining Community Advice Centre and used his skills to help and advise people from the Stainforth and Hatfield mining community.

The NUM Office & Advice Centre helped hundreds of miners who had problems with:

A) Vibration White Finger
Claims for Disablement Benefit to DSS.
Claims for damages against NCB/BCC.
Claims for Reduced Earnings Allowance
Attendance Allowance (if over retirement age).
Disability Living Allowance (if under retirement age).

B) Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Claims to DSS for Disablement Benefit
Claims Common Law Damages, against the employer

C) Coal Workers Pneumoconiosis and Asbestosis
Claims to DSS for Disablement Benefit
Claims for Common Law Damages, against the employer.
Claims Reduced Earnings Allowance

D) Chronic Bronchitis and Emphysema
Claims to DSS for Disablement Benefit
Claims for Common Law Damages, against the employer.

The NUM Office & Advice Centre also helped miners suffering from:

E) Dermatitis

F) Cancer of the throat or bowel

G) Deafness

The NUM Office & Advice Centre assisted with filling out forms for DSS claimants and gave advice to people on Income Support, Housing Benefit or other means tested benefits with regards to making claims for compensation.

Unfortunately this asset was lost as funding could not be acquired to continue its operation and Dave returned to his homeland in Durham. However, we will endeavour to continue helping and assisting miners and their families through this website.
