Celynen
(Newbridge)

In 1873 work began on the first of Celynen's three shafts. The first coal to be extracted on a commercial basis was brought to surface three years later in 1876.

For the following thirty years the colliery employed as many as 1740 men at any one time and they were producing over 10,000 tons of coal per week.

The area to the east of the shafts provided most of the colliery's output and it is said that as many as 110 stalls were used in extracting the coal from this area.
