Ferndale Colliery

Ferndale is actually several pits grouped under one name. Instead of just the two shafts as is in a conventional coal mine, Ferndale utilised nine shafts. The photograph above shows shafts 8 and 9.

Shaft 8 was sunk in 1894 to a depth of 456 yards. The area it served made up the largest of Ferndale's mines and 1145 men were employed there when the mine was at it's peak in 1918.

No. 8 was used to raise coal until 1935 and No. 9 was used to raise coal until 1960.
