Britannia
1910 - 1989

Work began at the Britannia site in 1910. By the 1920's Britannia Colliery employed more than 1700 men.

In the 1930's several other mines were opened in this area and production from this group of collieries was maintained until Britannia Colliery itself was closed in 1983.

For the following six years the shafts were used for ventilation for the neighbouring Oakdale Colliery, which was closed in 1989.
