Penalta Colliery
1906 - 1991

Work began on the site of Penalta Colliery in 1906 and by 1909 the mine was in full production.

By 1931 the mine had hit it's peak and was employing over 3,200 men. Throughout the thirties the colliery continued to be efficient and in 1939 Penalta earned the European Record for windings of coal in a single week.

In 1986 an underground fire caused the closure a coal face and this seemed to be the start of a downturn in fortunes for the mine.

In 1991 Penalta ceased production and was closed.

These photographs show Penalta after the closure of the colliery, shortly before the area was cleared.
