Deep Navigation Colliery
1878 - 1991

When the shafts were created in 1878 they were the deepest shafts in the coal industry. Sunk to a depth of 760 yards, the colliery certainly lived up to it's name.

When the pit was at the peak of it's life the mine owners employed 2062 men, women and children.

For many years the the pit was declared to produce the best quality Welsh steam coal.

The Deep Navigation Colliery ceased production and was closed in 1991
